What is WECLIFS?
Wildlife, Environment Change, and Local Indigenous Food Systems (WECLIFS) is a McGill-based research initiative focused on the impacts of environmental change on local Indigenous food systems in northern Quebec, funded primarily by Ouranos, gouvernement du Québec, Institut nordique du Québec, Canada's Climate Change Adaptation Fund, and McGill University. WECLIFS and its subprojects emphasize collaborative knowledge co-production approaches with Eeyou Istchee and Nunavik regional organizations, communities, and knowledge holders, as well as provincial and federal organizations with mandates inclusive of northern Quebec.
Where is WECLIFS?
WECLIFS focuses on Northern Quebec, including the Nunavimmiut (Nunavik Inuit) region of Nunavik and the Eeyouch (James Bay Cree) region of Eeyou Istchee. These two regions are co-signatories of the 1975 James Bay Northern Quebec Agreement.
Who is WECLIFS?
The WECLIFS research team is affiliated with McGill's Centre for Indigenous Peoples’ Nutrition and Environment, the Department of Natural Resource Sciences, and the School of Human Nutrition, all located on McGill University’s Macdonald Campus in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec. Principal investigators include Murray Humphries (natural sciences), Treena Delormier (health sciences), and Gordon Hickey (social sciences). The colours indicate primary disciplinary focus and specialization.
Northern Quebec regional organizations involved in WECLIFS include multiple organizations from Nunavik and Eeyou Istchee with mandates related to wildlife, environment, health, food security, and climate change adaptation. WECLIFS involved organizations are included to the left and WECLIFS funders are included at the right.
